‘Men don’t talk face to face – they talk shoulder to shoulder.’ That’s the motto adopted by men’s sheds all over the globe, and Louth Men’s Shed are no exception. Established in July 2015, the community group has gone from strength to strength in its efforts to build a network of support in the local community.
Having boasted 40 members at one point, the Men’s Shed aims to tackle the issues of loneliness, social isolation and related mental health concerns for vulnerable adults. The group provides a local meeting space for like-minded folks to socialise, share jokes and get stuck into creative projects. From building hedgehog boxes for local wildlife rescues to sprucing up planters, residents can see the efforts of the group across Louth’s community spaces.
‘We’ve created a space where men can socialise and learn new skills but, more than that, Louth Men’s Shed is a place where people can find a listening ear when they need it,’ says Martin. ‘One individual told me that the support he found here saved his life. There simply aren’t enough men’s sheds in the area and I’d encourage anyone to consider joining one or starting up their own.’
